1742 D. João V builds the Palace, Enclosure, Gardens and Convent of the Necessidades
1750 Death of D. João V. Church, Palace and part of the Convent completed
1755 Lisbon's great earthquake; the Necessidades escaped unharmed, becoming the city's headquarters of the Oratorian monks
1833 The Palace and Convent become official residence of D. Maria II
1836 Marriage of D. Maria II to D. Fernando II
1841 Bonnard appointed head gardener at Tapada das Necessidades by D. Fernando II
1843 Development of an 'English style' garden and park by D. Fernando II
1844 D. Pedro V orders construction of the Circular Greenhouse
